Puerto Pollenca is one of the localities in the Balearic Islands, Spain that has the oldest history in the Mediterrenean. In the time of the Phoenicians the city became an important Mediterrenean port, which went on through the centuries with the egyptians, carthagineans, romans and the arabs. Puerto Pollenca in Mallorca was not founded until the 13th century, in the year 1229 to be exact. It was done so by the orders of the King Jaime I. Of it´s monuments we shall not fail to mention Roser Vell, a sanctuary from the 14th century, the 18th century Parroquial church, the historic center of the city, the Gallo Fountain from the 19th century, the Saint Jordi Oratory from the 16th century, the Calvario Chapel of the 18th century and many more. These monuments are part of the history and culture of this city, and for it´s beauty alone they are worth visiting and admiring.
It´s maximum splendor was lived during the Roman Era, when it was called Pollentia, Pollenca the capital of the Balearic Islands in Spain.
Ina the 20th century, Pollenca as well as the rest of the island had a great metamorphical change, and what once was a city that lived off the fruits of it´s lands and the sea, became one that began to live from tourism. Pollenca is the tourist destination choses by thousands of people to enjoy their holidays. Famous personalities like Winston Churchill and Agatha Christie came here to find inspiration and great rest and relaxation. |
